'PAGAR AYU' PREMIERE & BLESSING CEREMONY

  • Hunter's Point Park Oval Center Boulevard at Borden Ave Long Island City, NY United States (map)

Gamelan Dharma Swara premieres a welcome dance piece reimagined for a New York gamelan by artist-in-residence Gusti Komin and dancer Shoko Yamamuro. "Pagar Ayu" will take a permanent role for Dharma Swara in the greeting of audiences while purifying the setting and seeking blessings from the spirits in establishing the ensemble's voice in an evolving Balinese performing arts landscape. The premiere will be presented in the spirit of the celebration of ‘Tumpek Krulut’ – a holy occasion for the blessing of instruments, ensuring continued sacred sounds and harmony — with a free, public outdoor performance by the East River on Memorial Day Weekend in Long Island City.

*This project is supported by funds from the New York State Council on the Arts, Statewide Community Regrants Program (formerly the Decentralization Program) with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature, and administered by Flushing Town Hall.
